Madoc & District Recreation Centre Arena: A Glimpse Behind the Scenes
Ever wondered what it takes to transform a concrete floor into the ice surface enjoyed by hundreds of skaters, hockey players, and families each season at the Madoc & District Recreation Centre Arena?
Long before opening day arrives, our dedicated arena operators, alongside support from Eastern Rink Services during key stages of the ice installation process, are hard at work preparing the facility from the ground up. Creating and maintaining a quality ice surface is a highly detailed operation that requires technical expertise, careful planning, teamwork, and constant attention to ensure the rink is safe, consistent, and ready for use throughout the season.
Some of the work that goes into preparing the arena includes:
✅ Inspecting and monitoring the refrigeration system
✅ Maintaining the dehumidification system to control moisture and fog
✅ Inspecting boards, glass, gates, benches, and safety equipment
✅ Cleaning and preparing the concrete slab before ice installation
✅ Building the ice surface one thin layer at a time
✅ Painting the ice, including lines, creases, and logos
✅ Monitoring ice temperature, building conditions, and water quality
✅ Completing deep cleaning and facility-wide setup
✅ Performing preventative maintenance and safety inspections on the ice resurfacer
✅ Measuring ice thickness to ensure a safe and consistent skating surface
And the work doesn't stop once the doors open.
Throughout the season, our arena team completes daily inspections, resurfaces the ice between users, monitors temperatures, performs preventative maintenance, cleans dressing rooms and public spaces, keeps detailed operating records, and works closely with user groups to ensure the facility is ready for every practice, game, public skate, and community event.
What may look like a simple sheet of ice is actually the result of weeks of preparation, specialized knowledge, ongoing maintenance, and countless hours of dedicated work by our arena team, with support from Eastern Rink Services during the seasonal ice installation process.
