This Fire Prevention Week, the Centre Hastings Fire Department is reminding everyone that lithium-ion batteries are powerful, but they can also be dangerous if not used properly. These batteries are in many devices we use every day, from smartphones and laptops to power tools and e-bikes.

To keep your home and family safe:

• Charge safely: Use the charger that comes with your device, and avoid charging overnight or unattended. Keep batteries away from flammable materials.
• Store carefully: Store spare batteries in a cool, dry place, away from metal objects that could cause a short circuit.
• Recycle responsibly: Don’t throw old batteries in the trash. Take them to designated recycling locations.
