A 6-Week Community Respect Campaign

Respect is one of the foundations of a strong and healthy community. In today's fast-paced world, simple acts of kindness, understanding, and support can have a lasting impact on the people around us. Whether it's helping a neighbour, thanking a volunteer, listening to someone's perspective, or lending a hand to those in need, respect strengthens the connections that bring our community together.

The Municipality of Centre Hastings is proud to launch Small Town, Big Respect, a six-week campaign designed to encourage residents of all ages to reflect on the importance of respect in our daily lives. Through weekly activities, community challenges, and opportunities to recognize those making a difference, we hope to inspire positive actions that build a more welcoming, inclusive, and caring community.

This campaign is about more than words. It is about demonstrating integrity, treating others with dignity, working together, and looking out for one another. By embracing these values, we help create a community where everyone feels valued, supported, and respected.

In a small town, every action matters. Every kind gesture, every helping hand, and every act of respect helps shape the community we share.

Together, we can show that a small town can have a big impact through respect.

The Small Town, Big Respect Campaign encourages residents to show respect for one another, local businesses, schools, public spaces, and the community as a whole. Through weekly themes, community activities, and positive messaging, the campaign helps build pride, kindness, safety, and a sense of belonging.

It Starts With Me

The Small Town, Big Respect Community Pledge is an opportunity for residents, businesses, organizations, sports teams, service clubs, volunteers, youth, and visitors to demonstrate their commitment to making the Municipality of Centre Hastings a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful community for everyone.

Through the pledge, participants commit to treating others with kindness, dignity, and respect; using positive words and actions; supporting their neighbours; taking pride in their community; and helping to create a safe and welcoming environment for all. The pledge also encourages residents to recognize the contributions of local volunteers, support youth and community organizations, and lead by example in their daily lives.

The pledge is open to everyone. Whether you are a lifelong resident, a new member of the community, a local business owner, a student, a volunteer, a service club member, or someone visiting Centre Hastings, you can take part and help foster a culture of respect and understanding throughout our municipality.

By signing the pledge, participants acknowledge that small actions can make a big difference. A simple act of kindness, offering assistance to a neighbour, showing patience in public spaces, supporting local initiatives, or helping keep our community clean and welcoming can have a lasting impact on those around us.

Show Your Support

After taking the pledge, we encourage individuals and groups to share their commitment with the community. Take a photo of yourself, your family, workplace, sports team, community organization, school group, service club, volunteer group, or local business holding your signed pledge and share it on social media.

Keeping Centre Hastings Clean, One Piece at a Time

A clean community is something we can all be proud of. This challenge encourages residents of all ages to work together to help keep our parks, trails, roadsides, schools, neighbourhoods, and public spaces clean and welcoming.

🎯 The Challenge

I challenge myself to:

Pick up at least 10 pieces of litter in my neighbourhood, park, trail, schoolyard, or community space.
Dispose of waste properly and recycle whenever possible.
Encourage friends, family, classmates, and neighbours to participate.
Help protect local wildlife, waterways, and natural areas by keeping litter out of the environment.
Take pride in making Centre Hastings a cleaner and more welcoming community.

As students have returned to school, Week 4 of the Small Town, Big Respect Campaign focuses on Respect on Our Roads. Safety is respect in action. Whether you're driving, cycling, walking, or riding the bus, we all share a responsibility to help ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely.

💛 This Week's Challenge: Slow down and stay alert.

Ways you can show respect on our roads:

✅ Slow down in school zones and near playgrounds
🚌 Stop for school buses and obey all signals
🚸 Watch carefully for children at crosswalks and intersections
👮 Follow the directions of crossing guards

👮 Follow the rules & respect our OPP officers & first responders!
📵 Put distractions away while driving
🚴 Share the road safely with cyclists
🚜 Be patient around farm equipment and other slow-moving vehicles
👏 Thank your school bus driver and crossing guards for helping protect our students each day

A few extra moments of patience and awareness can make a lasting difference. By looking out for one another, we help create a safer and more welcoming community for everyone.

As school has started, let's work together to keep our roads safe. Slow down, stay alert, and show respect for everyone traveling in our community.

As we continue our Small Town, Big Respect Campaign, Week 5 focuses on Respect Our Schools and Youth. Students thrive when communities support education, encourage positive growth, and invest in the next generation.

Whether it's offering words of encouragement, volunteering your time, donating school supplies, or simply recognizing the hard work of students, teachers, and education workers, we all play a role in helping young people succeed.

💙 This Week's Challenge: Show support for local students and educators.

Ideas include:

✅ Donate school supplies to a local initiative
✅ Encourage a student and celebrate their achievements
✅ Thank a teacher, educational assistant, bus driver, or school staff member
✅ Volunteer at a youth-focused activity or community program
✅ Recognize youth volunteers who make a difference in our community

The success of our schools depends on the support of our entire community. By welcoming students back, recognizing educators, and encouraging youth involvement, we help create an environment where young people feel valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.

This is a free community event, proudly presented as part of the Summer Special Events Series hosted by the Municipality of Centre Hastings.

Before the Show: What You Need to Know

The Quiet Window
The first 15 minutes of the show features the hypnosis induction. Please avoid entering or exiting the seating area and keep noise to a minimum during this time.
Put the Video Away (Briefly)
Flash-free photos are welcome throughout the show. However, no video recording is permitted during the opening 15-minute induction.
Volunteering is Choice-Based
Audience volunteers are always willing participants. No one will be forced on stage, and hypnosis cannot make you act against your morals or personal boundaries.
Alternative Show Format
If fewer than 10 volunteers participate, the performance will continue as an interactive demonstration.
Souvenirs
Merchandise will be available for purchase after the show, including books, apparel, and self-help audio programs.

The schedule has aligned and the weather forecast looks promising for this upcoming weekend!

The rescheduled Canada Day Fireworks Display will take place at Moira Lake, with fireworks being launched from the shores of Moira Lake and illuminating the night sky over the water. The display can be viewed from various locations around the lake, with the best viewing location being the Moira Lake Boat Launch.

The Centre Hastings Fireworks Team is excited to finally bring you the fireworks display that was originally scheduled for Canada Day. We appreciate everyone's patience and support and they look forward to putting on a spectacular show for the community.

As always, fireworks are weather dependent. Wind, rain, and other adverse conditions may require postponement or cancellation. Safety remains the top priority, and conditions will be monitored closely leading up to the event.

Honour Our Veterans Banner Program

The Municipality of Centre Hastings has been in partnership with the BIT & Madoc Legion Branch 363 with this program since 2021.

This fantastic program showcases our veterans and members who paid the supreme sacrifice.

The banners are placed up throughout Centre Hastings and the area from September to November.

Applications are available at the Madoc Legion Branch 363 & Mackenzie Mills Emporium.

🌱 Community Trees Event – This Week! 🌱

Don’t forget—our Community Trees Event is happening this week! Join us in growing a greener Centre Hastings by picking up free tree seedlings for your property. 🌳💚

📅 Date: Saturday, May 2nd, 2026
📍 Location: Centre Hastings Arts Centre (24 Seymour Street West, Madoc) – next to the skate park
🕘 Time: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM (while supplies last)

🌿 Event Details:
• Centre Hastings residents only
• Up to five (5) FREE tree seedlings per person
• A list of available tree species can be found on our website

🌳 For the Kids!
While you’re here, bring the little ones to our colouring station! Kids can enjoy tree-themed colouring sheets and get creative while learning about nature and the environment. 🎨🌲

🌳 Before You Arrive:
• Bring a container for safe transport
• Keep seedlings cool, dark, and moist until planting

🌿 What to Know:

Open to residents of Centre Hastings only
Receive up to five (5) free tree seedlings per person

🌳 Before You Come:

Bring a suitable container to transport your seedlings
Keep trees cool, dark, and moist until planting to ensure they thrive

This initiative supports environmental stewardship while helping enhance the natural beauty of our community for generations to come.

Important Notice

The Municipality of Centre Hastings has placed orders for the tree stock listed above. However, availability may vary, and not all species or quantities are guaranteed due to nursery supply and seasonal growing conditions.

All trees are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and are available exclusively to residents of Municipality of Centre Hastings.

Supplies are limited, and distribution will continue while quantities last!

Fish For Free 2026

Four times a year, Canadian residents can fish in Ontario for free. This means you do not need to buy a fishing licence if you want to fish during:

Family Fishing Weekend ( February 14-16,2026)
Mother's Day Weekend (May 9–10, 2026)
Father's Day Weekend (June 20–21, 2026)
Family Fishing Week (June 27–July 5, 2026)

Free fishing periods remind us of the value of Ontario’s recreational fishery, and the importance of keeping it healthy for future generations. While fishing during a free fishing period you must:

follow conservation licence catch limits
obey size limits and sanctuaries
follow the fishing regulations
carry a permit or identification card issued by the provincial or federal government, showing your name and date of birth
